Why Homeopathy?

Modern miracle drugs and elaborately equipped hospitals, the sad truth is that today’s medicine can sometimes be no more effective than out dated practices from earlier times.   Despite the fact that modern science develops spectacular new drugs and techniques, evidence suggests we are not getting any healthier. Many epidemic diseases have been brought under control possibly due to better sanitation than anything else. We are now seeing an alarming increase in other diseases: emphysema, mental illness, heart disease, cancer.  Cancer is now the second leading cause of death among children.

Western medical practitioners generally proceed on the principle that a disease or a symptom of a disease is cured by using a medicine that opposes the symptoms.  This is called allopathic medicine and it is what most of us have been raised to expect from the doctors we visit and the remedies we take. A good example is the treatment of pain. In allopathic medicine, aspirin and others analgesics are used to relieve the pain. Yet common sense tells us that just alleviating the pain doesn’t really do anything to solve the underlying cause.

Modern medicine’s approach of fighting one symptom at a time might win a battle or two but ultimately loses the war.  Sometimes is hard to determine what is worse, the disease or the side effects of the supposed cures. There is a growing trend in this country among heath care professionals to take a different approach to treating illnesses, it’s called Homeopathy and it has been used for hundreds of years.

Homeopathy is based on two guiding principles. The first principle is to treat the whole patient and not just the symptoms of an illness. Treating the symptoms with drugs ignores the real cause and can often lead to unwanted side effects. The second principle is called the  “law of similar” – a discovery made long ago that the very thing which causes the symptoms of a disease also cures them.  It’s the idea that “ likes cures like.” The idea has been advanced for thousands of years by various philosophers and physicians. The underlying philosophy behind homeopathy has been researched and recorded. This research has found that each disease has a specific set of symptoms, which can be suppressed by administering a compound which produces a similar set of symptoms.  This is quite a different approach from that of allopathic medicine, which fights an illness by suppressing the symptoms.

This diluted compound has a contrary effect of a concentrated compound.   The history of homeopathy began with the discoveries of its founder Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician.  His first major success came with an epidemic of Scarlet fever. Bella Donna is a deadly poison, which produces symptoms identical to those of Scarlet fever, yet by administering tiny doses of the same Bella Dona in an extremely diluted solution, he was able to largely alleviate the symptoms and keep most of his patients alive.  Modern medicine generally favors strong doses of concentrated drugs.  Today’s medications carry lengthy warnings of possibly detrimental side effects.  Some medications are administered in almost toxic doses attempting to saturate the body with a compound in order to achieve the desired effect.  Homeopathy on the other hand, the less the better and it works on stimulating the body’s own natural defenses.  Homeopathic remedies can be used orally or topically and it can treat a variety of physical illness without the dangerous side effects of concentrated medications.  Homeopathy has long been practiced and accepted in Europe and other parts of the world, yet acceptance in America has been slow in coming.  Homeopathy is now enjoying renewed popularity in the U.S and growing by 25% per year.

Another complaint about Western medicine is the confusion involved in deciding what to use for your symptoms. There is no confusion about which medicine to use in Homeopathy, the label spells out what it is used for since the name of the medicine is the same as the ailment. For example: “Cold” is used to treat running nose, headaches, shortness of breath and sore throat; “Fatigue” which is used to treat insomnia, exhaustion and stress;  “Vigor Vitality” to restore energy; “Arthritis” to reduce pain and stiffness, inflammation, and to reduce swelling and pain from injuries. These are just some of the many homeopathic formulas.   There are a lot of formulas made for the needs of children such as earaches, bedwetting and fever. In most instances the presence of the homeopathic medicine merely stimulates the body to heal itself.

Before long the advantages of homeopathic medicine will make it as widely used as any other over the counter remedy.  It is true that homeopathy can’t treat all conditions, trauma medicine and some surgical procedures have no alternatives but in the treatment of common illnesses and disease it offers patients a natural and safe alternative.  As with all substances please look for quality in the medicines you buy, it is only by using the products of an established reputable company with the highest standards for control that you can be sure to achieve the results you expect.
