Our bodies create waste at every level. When we are young, its waste management systems, the lungs, the kidneys, the G-I tract, and the skin, do a good job of keeping up with the flow. As part of the normal aging process, these systems gradually become less efficient and waste begins to accumulate in various places, much of it in the spaces between our fat cells. These waste products are comprised of many things, such as environmental contaminants, cellular metabolic by-products, free radicals. The space in between adjacent cells is called the interstitial space. Primarily, cellular waste products build up in the interstitial space in the skin and subcutaneous tissues, our “surface” fat. Waste product collection sites draw water to maintain an even osmotic pressure with the fluid inside the adjacent cells, much the way submarines increase air pressure so as not to get crushed by the pressure of the ocean depths. However, the pressure from the accumulation of contaminants and water impedes the normal circulation of blood in the millions of capillaries which transport cellular building blocks to the cells and take away the waste produced by the cells in the adjacent tissues. More waste accrues. More “room” is made for our bodily trash and more water is drawn to the sites to equalize the pressure within and without the cell walls. Not a pretty picture, is it?
It’s important to note that this system causes results that neither diet nor exercise can address! No matter how much weight is lost, or how much muscle is toned, the garbage dumps within the “surface” fat stay and grow. In fact, weight loss will actually make the problem more visible. That’s one of the reasons “fit” people of a certain age often appear to have more skin problems than people who are overweight. It’s not that they actually have more skin problems. It’s simply that the age related problems they do have are more visible. There you have it. The root problem is unwanted waste and water build up in the surface layers of the body. The Solution? For ages people have been able to address half of the problem. Steam baths, saunas, sweat lodges, and thermal wraps, pore blocking creams and clays force the body to release retained water in order to bring its internal operating temperature back to a safe level. When that happens the retained water will be gradually released because it is no longer needed. The skin tightens and smooths out over the entire body. Problem areas often disappear as the fluid that made the area puffy mottled is flushed out. Even areas of cellulite will improve somewhat.
